10 Simple Tips for Healthier Hair

Since college I’ve wanted to grow my hair out really long, and even though I was patient for years, my hair didn’t really seem to grow. 😔

I started researching and trying out suggestions for getting longer and healthier hair a little while back. My hair is finally starting to improve, and I wanted to share some of the best advice I ended up using:

1. Braid Your Hair at Night 🛌

Loosely braid your hair every night before going to bed. I think it also helps to keep your hair braided as often as possible. Since the hairs are kept in place, there’s less breakage and was probably a big source of my problem.

2. Use Scrunchies

Always use scrunchies instead of hair ties, since they are gentler on your hair. I recently started using silk scrunchies (or maybe it was satin?), very comfortable. Added bonus: they don’t cut your circulation when around your wrist!

3. Silk or Satin Pillowcases

Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases are rough on your hair when you twist and turn at night. I’ve linked two pillowcases from Amazon below that I’ve tried so far, my favorite is the first one since it has a zipper (but it only has silk on one side). The second one is cheaper and has silk on both sides (also comes with two cases!), but it’s open on one end (except for a little flap) and my pillow slides out. If getting the second one, I would get a size bigger than the pillow it’s for.

4. Shampoo and Conditioner🚿

Buy good quality shampoo and conditioner, and always use conditioner if your hair gets wet. Add a good deep conditioner 1-2 times per week. I’m still experimenting with what works best for me, suggestions are welcome!

5. Microfiber Towels

Use only Microfiber towels for your hair. Regular towels can be very damaging to your hair, and as an added plus microfiber towels absorbs water really well. I purchased a two pack of TurbieTwists and use them every time I wash my hair, like the ones below (linked to Amazon):

6. Biotin Supplement💊

Take a Biotin supplement daily.

7. Coconut Oil/Light Leave-In Hair Treatments

Use a coconut oil or other light spray you can leave in your hair.

8. Drink Water  💧🚰

Drink lots of water! So many health benefits associated with drinking enough water and always staying hydrated.

9. Heat and Styling Products

Avoid using heat products on your hair, except for rare occasions. Same with clip in extensions and similar.

10. Comb and Brushing

Use a thick comb to brush your hair. Always start from the bottom up to avoid breakage, and try to avoid brushing your hair more than necessary. I’m still working on this one…

Thank you for reading, and please leave a comment if you have any good hair tips I didn’t include! 🙂
